Preece regained a place on the pro tour by coming through Q School in 2016. He was one of the four leading players on the Order of Merit not to otherwise gain a tour card.
The Welshman won the World Amateur title at the age of just 17 in 1999, beating David Lilley in the final. He also won the European under-19 Championship the previous year.
Preece turned pro in 2003 and had several seasons on the main tour. His best run came at the 2009 Welsh Open when he knocked out three players – including Stuart Bingham – to reach the last 32 before losing to Stephen Maguire.
